4x4 Trails

Crucial points for 4x4 Trails

To fully enjoy our thrilling 4×4 routes, you’ll need a 4×4 with low-range and good ground clearance. While we make every effort to maintain the routes, changing weather conditions can lead to fallen branches and obstacles. Be prepared to clear branches to avoid minor scratches on your vehicle.

Upon arrival, you’ll receive a detailed map with clear top-down views, GPS coordinates, and descriptions of interesting sights along the route.

You have the option to drive the 4×4 trails on your own or with a guide, but if you require a guide, please book and pay at least 7 days in advance.

We welcome utility quads and off-road motorcycles, but for safety reasons, we don’t allow motorcycles, quads, and 4x4s on the routes simultaneously unless they are part of the same group. Safety is our top priority, and we want you to have a memorable and secure adventure!

3 Provinces 4x4 Trail

5/5
This is the longest and most spectacular route on the farm, taking you up to where the boundaries of Mpumalanga, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Freestate meet. The meeting point is on top of a 90m high cliff, called Langkrans, at 2 253m above sea level. Apart from the breathtaking views over the countryside, the cliff is also home to a breeding pair of Black Eagles. The first main obstacle on the 3 Provinces trail, a short rocky climb up the mountain, will give you a good idea of what the rest of the route has in store for you. The route is 34km in length and will take 4 – 6 hours to complete. The difficulty of the route has been rated by Drive-Out Magazine as a 3-4 out of 5, however some obstacles have a 5 rating. One such obstacle is ‘Helshoogte’, a 300m long steep incline that rises roughly 100m in altitude from top to bottom. It is riddled with loose boulders and a stream running down the track making it extremely difficult to drive. Only experienced drivers with a very capable 4x4 vehicle (front and rear diff locks as well as extra high ground clearance) should attempt this obstacle. During wet weather the entire trail is very difficult to near impossible to drive, but dries out quickly during sunshine. After about 2 hours of full sun, the routes are dry enough to continue.

Pannetjies Pass 4x4 Trail

5/5
We are excited to announce our new short route to the 3 Provinces Beacon. We call it "Pannetjies Pass". This is the easiest 4x4 trail and is ideal for anyone new to 4x4ing to drive on their own. It winds its way up the side of the mountain with breathtaking views along the way, with only a few minor obstacles en-route to the top. This is the quickest way up to the top of Langkrans for an awesome sundower or a night drive. It takes about 30minutes from the farmhouse to the top.

Tierkloof 4x4 Trail

5/5
The Tierkloof 4x4 trail is short but challenging, with a few interesting obstacles. Navigate over huge boulders inside thick bush, before taking a short steep rocky climb to the top of the mountain (escape route available). After a short scenic drive you’ll have to drive down one of the steepest downhill sections on the farm (escape route available). The route is 8km in length but takes about 2 – 3 hours to complete.

Bobbejaankrans 4x4 Trail

5/5
This is another short 4x4 trail. Starting just outside the campsite, it winds its way through thick bush and over rocky terrain, with a few hair-raisingly steep up- and downhills. The route continues past the Mountain cabins and can be used as an alternative route from the campsite to the cabins. This route is only 5km in length and takes just 1 - 2 hours to complete. It is ideal for a quick morning or afternoon drive.

Walletjiestraat 4x4 Trail

5/5
Take a steep drive down into a ravine and drive upstream, navigating sharp turns, a muddy axle-twister and a small log bridge before climbing out on the other side. Chances are that you will get stuck, so remember to bring recovery gear and a friend, or a winch, or both. If you know your vehicle well, this is a good obstacle to test its limits. You will need extra ground clearance and front and rear diff locks are recommended. It is only about 1km in length, and if you are lucky, it should take only 30minutes to complete. If you get stuck though, it could take a while...

Tierkloof Extreme 4x4 Trail – Guided only

5/5
An amazing route with spectacular views, very steep ups, downs and a few scary slide slopes. A real test of your nerves! A section of the route leads you over spectacular sandstone layers. Over a 100 years ago sandstone blocks were carved from these layers and used to build the farmhouse. It is 5kms in length but takes 2 - 3 hours to complete. This route is guided only, and needs to be booked at least 7 days in advance.

Battlefield History Trail - Guided only

5/5
This guided-only route is packed with history as we take you to visit famous Anglo-Boer War landmarks and lesser-known historic sites on private farms. Some of the landmarks include Allemansnek, Korenplaats and the Volksrust concentration camp. We visit forts, historical graves and caves where women and children used to hide during the war while listening to amazing true stories of survival in this harsh landscape during the war. Included on this route is a lunch stop at a Museum where traditional Boer meals will be served. After lunch, take a leisurely stroll through the museum to view the unique memorabilia and antiques collected over the years by the owner. The duration and sites visited during the day can be customised for each groups interests. Distances very between 70km - 100kms and can take up to 10 hours to complete. Because this is a guided-only route, a minimum of 6 vehicles and 15 people is required to book.
